Dollar Tree: Commercial Freezer Refrigerant Leak & Compressor Repair

A Dollar Tree location reported a frozen food section completely down: freezer units not holding temperature, shelves emptied. Hawks dispatched immediately, identified a refrigerant leak and failed condenser components, and restored the units to full operation same day.

On the job
Dispatched to a Dollar Tree. The frozen food section was completely down. Store had already pulled product off the shelves. Client reported the units stopped holding temperature overnight. Got there first thing in the morning.
8:00 AM · Site Arrival
First check is always the condenser unit. Pulled the access panel and immediately saw the problem: refrigerant leak at the suction line fitting, visible oil staining and corrosion on the copper. The compressor was still running but starved of refrigerant. Controller was reading 25°F instead of -10°F target.
8:20 AM · Assessment
📸 Photos 1–6: Pre-work, leak location, corroded fittings, failed condenser coil, overheated motor
Walked the store manager through the findings, showed them the leak point and explained what needed to happen. Scope included: repair the suction line leak, replace the condenser coil assembly, replace the evaporator fan motor, recharge the system with refrigerant, and verify temps. Got approval and went straight to work.
9:00 AM · Scope Approval
Recovered the remaining refrigerant, repaired the leak at the fitting, swapped the condenser coil and fan motor. Pressure tested the system, confirmed no additional leaks, then recharged to spec. New drain line routed clean, system buttoned back up.
11:30 AM · Repair Work
Powered the system back on and monitored the pull-down. Controller hit -10°F within the expected window, right where it needed to be. Ran it through a full cycle, confirmed the fan motor was running clean, no abnormal noise, no pressure spikes. Store had product back on shelves same afternoon.
1:45 PM · System Restored
📸 Photos 7–13: Completed, new condenser, clean drain lines, controller reading -10°F, freezer back in service
Job Complete Leak repaired · Condenser & fan motor replaced · System recharged · Controller reading -10°F · Store back in operation same day
